Pressure-treated wood is one of the most common materials used for backyard decks. It is widely available, usually costs less than cedar or hardwood, and is treated to resist decay and insects.
But treated lumber is not mistake-proof. Boards can shrink, twist, cup, or split. The wrong treatment level can fail early. Poor flashing can damage the house. Incorrect fasteners may corrode inside the wood. A weak railing or badly connected ledger can also create a serious safety problem.
The good news is that many of these problems can be reduced with careful planning.
This guide explains the most important things to know before building a pressure-treated wood deck. It is based on wood-treatment standards, building guidance, manufacturer instructions, and common homeowner problems. We have not personally built or tested the deck described in this article.

What is pressure-treated wood?
Pressure-treated wood is ordinary lumber that has been placed in a treatment cylinder. Air is removed from the wood, and a preservative solution is forced into it under pressure. The preservative helps protect the wood from fungal decay and wood-destroying insects.
The treatment does not make the lumber waterproof. It does not stop sun damage, checking, shrinking, or movement. It also does not correct weak framing, trapped water, or poor connections.
Common residential treated lumber may use preservatives such as copper azole or micronized copper systems. Products and chemical formulations vary. The end tag is the best place to identify the treatment, intended use, retention, inspection mark, and manufacturer.
Tip 1: Read the end tag before buying

The American Wood Protection Association, or AWPA, uses categories to show where treated wood is intended to be used. Common examples include:

Tip 2: Match every deck part to its exposure
A deck has several moisture zones. The deck boards face sun and rain. Joists may stay damp beneath the boards. Posts may contact soil or sit close to the ground. A ledger is attached beside the house, where a leak can remain hidden.
Because the exposure changes, the treatment requirement can also change.
Ask the supplier to confirm the correct treated product for:
- Decking boards
- Joists and beams
- Posts
- Stair stringers
- Ledgers
- Wood close to soil, masonry, or vegetation
- Freshwater, coastal, or severe-exposure locations
Some situations that look “above ground” may still need ground-contact treatment because the wood is difficult to replace, close to soil, poorly ventilated, or likely to remain wet. Follow the end tag, the preservative manufacturer’s instructions, and local requirements.
Tip 3: Choose the right lumber grade
Treatment protects against decay and insects. Grade tells you about structural quality. These are different things.
Structural lumber normally carries a grade stamp. It may identify the species group, grade, moisture condition, and grading agency. Span tables depend on this information.
Do not assume that every 2×8 or 2×10 can span the same distance. Southern Pine, Douglas Fir-Larch, Hem-Fir, and Spruce-Pine-Fir can have different design values. Grade also affects allowable span.
When selecting boards, look for:
- A readable grade stamp on structural pieces
- Straight boards with limited bow and twist
- Sound areas where connectors and fasteners will be installed

Tip 4: Decide between standard treated lumber and KDAT
Standard pressure-treated lumber is often wet when sold. Water is used to carry preservative into the wood. As the lumber dries, it can shrink, check, twist, or cup.
KDAT means kiln-dried after treatment. This lumber has been dried again after the pressure-treatment process. It is usually lighter and more stable at installation, but it may cost more and may not be available in every size or location.
KDAT does not mean the wood will never move. It still reacts to outdoor moisture. However, its more controlled moisture condition can make board spacing and finishing easier to plan.

Do not expect screws to fix every crooked board.

Good boards can become difficult boards if they are stored poorly.
Place lumber on level supports above the ground. Support it at enough points to prevent sagging. Keep the stack covered from rain while allowing airflow. Do not wrap wet lumber tightly in plastic for a long period, because trapped moisture can encourage mold and uneven drying.
Avoid leaving one face in strong sun while the other remains shaded and wet. Uneven drying can increase cupping and twisting.
If installation is delayed, follow the treater’s storage instructions. Keep labels and different treatment categories separated so the wrong board is not used in the wrong place.
Tip 7: Plan the complete structure before digging
A deck should not be designed one board at a time. Make a complete plan before buying materials or digging holes.
The plan should show:
- Deck width, length, and height
- House connection or freestanding design
- Footing positions and sizes
- Post locations
- Beam size, span, and assembly
- Joist size, spacing, span, and overhang
- Deck-board direction
- Stair location and landing
- Guard and handrail layout
- Utilities, doors, windows, vents, and drainage
Check property setbacks, easements, underground utilities, frost depth, soil conditions, and permit rules. Call the local utility-marking service before digging.

Tip 8: Do not guess footing depth or size
Footings transfer the deck load into the ground. If they are too small, too shallow, or placed on weak soil, the deck may settle or move.
Footing design depends on:
- Tributary load carried by each post
- Allowable soil-bearing capacity
- Local frost depth
- Deck height and lateral forces
- Slope and disturbed soil

Do not notch a post or bolt a beam to its side simply because the detail looks common online. Use an approved beam-to-post connection for the load and local rules.
Tip 10: Size beams and joists from approved tables
Lumber size alone does not determine capacity. Span, species, grade, spacing, load, overhang, wet-service conditions, and connection details all matter.

Pressure treatment does not protect the house framing behind the deck. If water enters at the ledger, it can cause hidden rot in the wall.
The flashing system should direct water over the ledger and away from the wall. It needs to work with the cladding, weather-resistant barrier, door thresholds, and any existing flashing.
Common mistakes include:
- Relying only on caulk
- Trapping water behind the ledger
- Puncturing flashing without sealing as required
- Using metal that reacts with the wood treatment

The treated-wood industry commonly recommends hot-dip galvanized or stainless-steel fasteners and hardware. However, the exact requirement depends on the preservative, retention level, moisture, salt exposure, connector, and fastener manufacturer.

Water should not sit between boards, against the house, or on top of joists.
Keep board gaps clear. Avoid details that create a pocket for leaves and dirt. At picture frames and breaker boards, make sure the framing and board layout still allow water to escape.
Joist tape may help protect the tops of joists and beams in some assemblies. It is not a replacement for correctly treated framing, compatible fasteners, ventilation, or good drainage. Use a tape approved for the wood treatment and follow its temperature, overlap, and surface-preparation instructions.
Tip 18: Put the better face where it performs best
Deck-board orientation is not as simple as always placing bark side up or bark side down. Growth-ring shape, existing cup, board quality, surface treatment, and fastening method all matter.
Follow the decking supplier’s instructions. If no direction is provided, inspect each board and choose the face that gives the best walking surface while allowing reliable fastening.
Do not install a board with a major defect facing downward and assume it no longer matters. A deep split, weak knot, or severe cup can still affect performance.
Tip 19: Use two proper fasteners at each joist when specified
Many face-fastened wood deck boards use two fasteners at each joist. The fasteners should be placed consistently and far enough from the edges and ends to reduce splitting.
The exact fastener size and placement depend on the decking thickness, board width, framing, treatment, and manufacturer instructions. Pre-drilling near board ends can help reduce splits, especially after the wood begins to dry.
Do not overdrive fasteners. A deeply buried head creates a pocket that can hold water and crushes the wood fibers. The head should sit as the fastener manufacturer directs.
Tip 20: Build guards as structural safety components
A deck guard is not decoration. People lean, push, and sometimes fall against it.
The height at which a guard is required, the required guard height, opening limits, and load rules depend on the adopted code and local amendments. Stair guards and handrails have their own requirements.

- Posts fastened only with a few nails or screws
- Notched 4×4 guard posts
- Rim joists without the required reinforcement

Tip 23: Choose a finish for protection, not a false promise
Pressure treatment mainly protects against biological decay and insects. It does not stop ultraviolet light, surface checking, or water movement.
A penetrating exterior finish can help reduce moisture cycling and slow color change. Semi-transparent stains show more grain, while more opaque products hide more variation. Film-forming coatings can be harder to maintain on horizontal deck surfaces if they peel.
Follow the finish manufacturer’s rules for:
- New treated wood
- Required moisture content
- Cleaning and brightening
- Weather and temperature
- Number of coats
- Application rate
- Drying time
- Future recoating
More product is not always better. Excess stain can remain sticky or dry unevenly.
