The first surprise is in the name.
Hardwood is not always hard. Softwood is not always soft.
The words describe the type of tree, not the performance of a deck board. Hardwood normally comes from broad-leaved flowering trees. Softwood normally comes from conifers with needles or scale-like leaves. Balsa is a hardwood, even though it is famously light and soft. Yew is a softwood, yet it is harder than several woods placed in the hardwood group.
That small detail changes how you should shop for decking.
A label saying “tropical hardwood” does not tell you the grade, moisture content, durability, source, or finished dimensions. A label saying “softwood” does not tell you whether the board is durable cedar heartwood, wet pressure-treated pine, or untreated lumber that should never have been placed outdoors.
The right question is not simply, “Should I buy hardwood or softwood?”
It is, “Which exact board suits my climate, budget, design, and willingness to maintain it?”
The short answer
Hardwood decking is often the better choice when you want a dense, premium surface with strong wear and decay resistance. Ipe, Cumaru, and Garapa can provide long service when they are correctly sourced and installed. The tradeoff is a higher price, heavier boards, harder cutting, slower fastening, and more expensive delivery.
Softwood decking is often the better choice when budget, local availability, easier handling, and straightforward repairs matter more. Cedar and redwood offer natural beauty. Pressure-treated pine offers a lower entry price and treatment categories for different exposures. The tradeoff is usually more surface movement, easier denting, or greater dependence on preservative treatment.
Neither group wins every category. The exact species and product matter more than the family name.
A useful comparison before we go deeper

These are general patterns, not purchasing specifications. There is enormous variation inside both groups.
What the showroom sample does not tell you
A small hardwood sample feels impressive. It is dense, smooth, and heavy for its size. A cedar sample feels warmer and lighter. A treated-pine sample may look plain beside both.
Now imagine the same materials as 16-foot boards.
The hardwood board may require two people to carry it safely. Every screw hole may need drilling. Blades wear faster. Long boards cost more to ship, and the order may arrive in mixed lengths that affect the layout.
The cedar board is easier to lift and cut, but its edges can bruise and its face can dent under careless handling. Wet pressure-treated pine may be even heavier than expected, then shrink as it dries.
This is where the real comparison begins. A deck is not a collection of samples. It is hundreds of square feet of wood that must be delivered, stored, cut, fastened, exposed to weather, and maintained for years.
Hardness matters, but not in the way many buyers think
The Janka hardness test measures the force needed to press a steel ball into wood. It is useful for comparing dent resistance. It does not tell you everything about outdoor durability, checking, stability, or structural strength.
Dense tropical species such as Ipe and Cumaru have very high Janka values. They resist dents from furniture, pet claws, and everyday traffic better than cedar. That can make a noticeable difference around dining areas or busy doors.
But very hard wood creates its own problems. It can be less forgiving during installation. A screw driven without the right pilot hole can snap, strip, or split the board. Dense wood can also become slippery when algae or debris covers it. Hardness is not slip resistance.
Cedar and redwood are softer. A dropped tool can leave a mark. A planter dragged across the deck may leave a groove. The benefit is that these woods are easier to cut and shape. Isolated surface damage can sometimes be sanded more easily, provided the board remains sound.
If your deck will hold heavy furniture that moves often, hardness deserves more weight in the decision. If you are building a detailed railing, curved border, or DIY project with ordinary tools, workability may matter more.
The durability question has three different answers
Buyers often ask which material lasts longer. The honest answer depends on which part of the deck you mean.
First, there is biological durability: the wood’s resistance to decay fungi and insects. Ipe and Cumaru are known for durable heartwood. Cedar and redwood heartwood also have natural decay resistance. Pressure-treated pine receives protection through preservative treatment rather than relying on natural heartwood extractives.
Second, there is surface durability: how well the board resists dents, scratches, checking, splinters, and foot traffic. Dense hardwood usually wins on dent resistance, while softer boards show wear sooner.
Third, there is structural service life: how long the complete deck remains safe. This depends on footings, posts, beams, joists, ledger flashing, fasteners, guards, stairs, drainage, and ventilation. Premium hardwood boards installed over damp, decaying framing do not create a premium deck.
This third answer is what most buyers miss.
A hardwood surface may last longer than the pressure-treated frame below it. When the surface is expensive, protecting and inspecting the hidden structure becomes even more important.
Heartwood and sapwood can change the result
Natural durability claims normally refer to heartwood, the darker inner wood of a tree. Sapwood is the younger outer wood and is generally less resistant to decay.
This distinction matters in cedar, redwood, and naturally durable hardwoods. Two boards sold under the same species name can contain different amounts of sapwood. One may match the durability reputation buyers expect. The other may not.
Ask the supplier what the grade allows. Do not rely only on the species name or one photograph. If the quote says “premium,” “select,” or “clear,” ask for the written grade description. Trade names are not always standardized between sellers.
For pressure-treated softwood, the equivalent detail is the treatment label. The American Wood Protection Association uses categories such as UC3B for certain above-ground exterior exposure and UC4A or higher for ground contact. Color does not prove that a board is suitable for burial or severe moisture.
The end tag matters more than the green or brown tint.
Moisture at delivery may change the whole installation
Hardwood decking is commonly sold air-dried or kiln-dried, depending on its intended use and supplier. Exterior and interior products can have different moisture targets. A board milled for an indoor floor should not be treated as exterior decking simply because it is the same species.
Pressure-treated softwood often arrives wet. Water carries the preservative into the lumber. As the board dries, it may become lighter, narrower, or less straight. Installing a large gap between very wet boards can leave oversized spaces later.
Kiln-dried-after-treatment lumber, often marked KDAT, is dried again after treatment. It usually costs more, but it can be lighter and more predictable at installation.
Cedar and redwood may be sold green, air-dried, or kiln-dried. That condition changes how the boards should be stored, spaced, and finished.
There is no universal deck-board gap that works for all these products. The right spacing depends on the current moisture condition, board width, local climate, and supplier instructions.
Hardwood installation costs more than the price tag suggests
Suppose two deck quotations list only the cost per linear foot. Hardwood already looks expensive. The final difference may be larger.
Dense boards often require sharp carbide-tipped blades, suitable drill bits, pre-drilled holes, stainless-steel fasteners, and more labor. Fresh cut ends may need an approved end-grain sealer. The material is heavy, so unloading and carrying take longer. Delivery can become a major expense when long tropical hardwood boards travel far from the importer.
Softwood is generally easier to source and replace. If one pressure-treated board is damaged five years later, a close size may be available at a nearby store. Matching the color and milling of an imported hardwood can be harder.
That does not make hardwood poor value. It means the correct comparison is installed cost, not board price.
A careful quote should include freight, waste, fasteners, plugs or clips, end treatment, tools, labor, finish, and future repair availability.
Softwood is not automatically the budget winner
Pressure-treated pine is normally one of the least expensive decking options at purchase. Clear cedar can be expensive. High-grade redwood can also cost more than buyers expect.
Grade can turn the usual hardwood-versus-softwood price story upside down.
A knotty cedar deck may fit a moderate budget. Clear vertical-grain cedar may compete with premium materials. A locally available hardwood may cost less than an imported softwood in another market.
There is also the cost of appearance. If you plan to cover cedar with a solid stain, paying for clear, beautiful grain may not make sense. If you want a natural-looking deck but dislike knots and color variation, low-cost softwood may require more sorting and waste.
Price the look you actually want, not the cheapest board carrying the species name.
Which one feels better under bare feet?
Softwood often feels warmer and softer underfoot. Cedar is popular in spaces where people sit, walk barefoot, or touch the railing often.
Dense hardwood feels solid and smooth when well milled. Its resistance to dents is useful in busy areas. However, any deck can develop splinters if boards check, fasteners lift, or the surface is damaged during cleaning.
Heat is more complicated. Dark boards absorb more solar energy than light boards, regardless of whether the wood is a hardwood or softwood. Air temperature, sun angle, finish color, board density, and airflow all affect the walking surface.
Do not buy a dark tropical hardwood assuming “natural wood stays cool.” Ask for samples, place them in direct sun at the project location, and compare them under the same conditions.
Around a pool, slip resistance deserves the same attention. Wood species alone does not make a surface safe. Finish, surface texture, algae, sunscreen, drainage, and maintenance all affect traction.
Every wood deck changes color
Fresh Ipe may be deep brown or olive. Cumaru can show red, golden, and darker brown tones. Garapa is often lighter and more golden. Cedar and redwood begin with their familiar warm colors.
Without enough pigment and maintenance, all of them weather toward gray.
This does not mean the wood has failed. It is a surface response to sunlight and weather. Some owners like the silver patina. Others spend time and money trying to preserve the original color.
Be honest about which owner you are before buying.
If you want the brown color to remain, plan for cleaning and a compatible penetrating finish. Clear sealer offers less UV protection than a transparent or semi-transparent product with pigment. Dense hardwood needs a finish designed to penetrate dense wood; ordinary deck stain may sit on top and become sticky.
Softwood absorbs more readily, but very wet pressure-treated lumber may not be ready for stain. The label’s moisture limit matters more than a fixed waiting period.
Maintenance is different, not absent
Hardwood is often sold with the phrase “low maintenance.” Cedar and pressure-treated wood are sometimes described in the same way. Neither means no maintenance.
All decks collect dirt. All board gaps can clog. All fasteners and structural connections need inspection. Algae can grow on any species in shade. Planters can trap moisture on Ipe just as they can on pine.
The main difference is what you expect from the surface.
A durable hardwood deck left to gray may need little cosmetic work beyond cleaning, yet the framing below still needs attention. A cedar deck kept amber may need more frequent finish maintenance. Pressure-treated pine may show checks and movement as it dries, requiring occasional fastener and surface attention.
Annual inspection is a better habit than following a rigid recoating calendar. Refinish when the current product, wood condition, and absorption tests show it is ready.
The framing can be a different species—and often should be
A hardwood deck does not require hardwood joists, beams, and posts. In many projects, the visible hardwood surface sits over pressure-treated framing.
That can be a sensible use of money. The dense, attractive material goes where people see and walk on it. Treatment-rated lumber goes into the structure, including areas with greater moisture risk.
The same mixed approach works with cedar and redwood decking.
But mixing materials requires planning. The framing spacing must support the chosen board thickness and installation angle. Fasteners must be compatible with both the deck board and treated framing. Joist protection products must not create a corrosion problem or trap water. The hidden frame should be accessible for inspection wherever practical.
Most importantly, structural spans come from the framing species and grade—not from the surface material. Check an approved local deck guide or project-specific design.
Sustainability starts with traceability
It is easy to make broad environmental claims about both groups.
Softwood grows quickly, so it must be sustainable. Hardwood lasts longer, so it must be sustainable. Neither statement is enough.
Responsible buying depends on forest management, legal harvest, transportation, milling yield, durability, repairability, and how long the deck stays in service.
For tropical hardwood, ask for the botanical species, country of origin, and credible chain-of-custody certification. Check the seller’s certificate rather than accepting a logo in an advertisement.
For cedar, redwood, or pine, ask the same questions about source and certification. Pressure treatment adds another consideration: scraps and removed boards must be handled and disposed of according to the product and local rules. Treated wood should never be burned.
A board that can be traced, installed correctly, maintained, and repaired is a better purchase than an anonymous product chosen only because it carries a “natural” label.
Three buyers, three different answers
Picture a homeowner building a large deck on a limited budget. The design is simple, the lumberyard carries pressure-treated pine in every required size, and replacement boards will be easy to find. Softwood is the practical answer. Spending the savings on correct flashing, hardware, and drainage may do more for the deck than upgrading only the surface.
Now picture a smaller deck beside a modern house. The surface is visible through large windows, furniture moves across it often, and the owner accepts the higher installation cost. A dense hardwood such as Ipe or Cumaru may justify its price.
The third deck is outside a bedroom in a mild climate. Barefoot comfort and warm color matter. The owner likes natural variation and is willing to maintain a penetrating finish. Cedar or redwood may be the better fit, even though neither is the cheapest nor the hardest.
The “best” material changes because the priorities change.
Questions worth asking before you order
Instead of asking the seller only for hardwood or softwood, ask for the full product description. You need the botanical species, grade, heartwood or sapwood allowance, drying method, current moisture range, actual dimensions, board profile, available lengths, and approved support spacing.
Ask which fasteners the supplier requires, whether cut ends need treatment, and what finish is compatible. Request the written warranty and return policy. Find out when defects must be reported and whether installed boards are excluded from claims.
For treated lumber, keep the end tags showing the AWPA Use Category and preservative information. For imported hardwood, keep the species and sourcing documents.
Finally, ask what happens when you need one matching board in seven years. The answer may be more useful than the current sales price.
So, which should you build?
Choose hardwood decking when density, dent resistance, rich color, and long-term surface durability justify the added cost and installation work. It suits buyers who can verify the source, accept heavy boards and pre-drilling, and plan for specialized fasteners and future supply.
Choose softwood decking when value, availability, lighter handling, and easier repair are more important. Pressure-treated pine is practical for a budget deck and structural framing. Cedar and redwood suit buyers who want a warmer, softer natural surface.
Do not let the category make the decision for you. A high-quality, mostly heartwood softwood board may be a better outdoor product than a poorly identified hardwood. Correctly treated pine may be safer in ground contact than naturally durable wood used in the wrong place.
The final choice should be based on the exact board, not the broad label.
