How to Use the Deck Baluster Calculator

Measure the clear distance between the inside faces of two finished railing posts. Enter that opening in feet and inches. Then enter the actual width of one baluster and the maximum clear gap you are allowed to use.

The calculator finds the smallest number of balusters that keeps every opening at or below your chosen maximum. It spreads the remaining space equally at both ends and between the balusters. This creates a balanced railing layout.

What This Calculator Shows

Balusters per railing section

This is the number required between one pair of posts. If several openings are exactly the same size, enter the number of sections to estimate the full quantity. Calculate uneven sections separately because even a small width difference changes the spacing.

Equal clear spacing

This is the open space between neighboring balusters and between each end baluster and its post. The result will not exceed the maximum gap entered in the calculator.

Center-to-center spacing

This is the repeating distance from the center of one baluster to the center of the next. Once the first center is marked, repeat this measurement across the rail. A story pole or spacer block can make repeated installation easier.

Measure this distance from the inside face of the left post. Mark the baluster center. Continue using the center-to-center distance shown in the results. The final gap should closely match the first gap if the measurements are accurate.

Equal gap = (clear opening − total baluster width) ÷ (number of balusters + 1)

There is one more gap than the number of balusters because the layout includes a gap at both posts.

Understanding the 4-Inch Baluster Rule

Many U.S. residential rules use a 4-inch sphere test for openings in required guards. This does not mean every project and every railing location uses the same limit. Stair guards can have different opening rules, and states or cities may amend the model code.

Enter the limit approved for your project. Some installers also plan slightly below the maximum to allow for measuring tolerance, wood movement, and small installation differences.

Confirm guard height, post spacing, rail strength, baluster attachment, stair openings, fasteners, material compatibility, and inspection requirements with the product manufacturer and your local building department.

How to Measure a Railing Opening Correctly

  1. Install or locate the finished posts first.
  2. Measure from the inside face of one post to the inside face of the next post.
  3. Measure near the top and bottom because posts may not be perfectly parallel.
  4. Use the smaller finished opening when a safe layout must fit both rails.
  5. Check the result with a full-size spacer or story pole before drilling every location.

Wood, Metal, and Composite Balusters

The spacing method works for square wood balusters, metal pickets, and many composite railing infills. Use the actual face width of the installed part. Round metal balusters may use a diameter, while shaped balusters should be checked at the point that creates the largest opening.

Proprietary railing kits may use fixed brackets, predrilled rails, or hidden connectors. In that case, follow the manufacturer’s layout and maximum-span instructions instead of changing the system to match a general calculation.

  • Using nominal baluster size instead of actual width.

How far apart should deck balusters be?

The clear opening must meet the rule adopted for your location and railing type. A 4-inch maximum is common for required residential guards in the United States, but verify the current local code before installation.

How many balusters do I need for a 6-foot opening?

It depends on the actual baluster width and allowed gap. For a 72-inch clear opening with 1.5-inch balusters and a 4-inch maximum gap, this calculator uses 13 balusters and creates equal gaps of 3.75 inches.

Should the end gaps match the gaps between balusters?

Equal gaps usually create the cleanest appearance. The calculator includes both end gaps in the layout and keeps them the same as the internal gaps.

Does the calculator work for stair balusters?

Not for final stair layout. Stair measurements follow the rail angle, and opening rules may differ around treads and triangular spaces. Use a stair-specific method and check the applicable code and railing instructions.

How many extra balusters should I buy?

A small allowance of about 5% is a practical starting point for simple sections. Buy more when pieces require cutting, color matching, or defect selection. Return policies and package quantities can also affect the final order.
