How to Choose Deck Joist Size

Joist size begins with the required span, but span alone is not enough. Prescriptive span tables list combinations of lumber size, species, grade and spacing. Read every heading and footnote. A number taken from the wrong row can produce the wrong frame.

1. Measure the actual joist span

Measure between the joist’s supporting points as defined by the plan or span table. Do not simply measure from the house to the outside edge of the deck. A drop beam may sit in from that edge, leaving a separate overhang.

A shorter supported span usually allows a smaller member or wider spacing. A longer span normally needs deeper joists, closer spacing, another beam or an engineered design.

2. Identify the lumber species and grade

Two pieces marked 2×10 are not automatically equal. Species groups have different design values. Grade also matters. Look for the grade stamp and match it to the approved span table.

Pressure-treated lumber may be sold wet. Some treated members are incised to help preservative enter the wood. Wet-service conditions and incising can affect design values, depending on the rules being used. Do not assume a generic online calculator covers the exact lumber in your yard.

4. Check deflection, not only strength

A joist can be strong enough without feeling pleasantly firm. Long joists may flex even when they meet a minimum table value. Deeper joists, closer spacing or an added beam can create a stiffer deck.

This is a comfort decision as well as a structural one. It is best made during planning, because changing the frame after the decking is installed is much harder.

Deck Joist Spacing: 12, 16 or 24 Inches?

Joist spacing is measured on center. With 16-inch OC spacing, the centers of neighboring joists are 16 inches apart. The open gap is smaller because the joists have thickness.

Many wood and composite deck layouts use 16 inches OC. Twelve inches OC is common when boards run diagonally, when a product requires closer support or when a stiffer surface is wanted. Twenty-four inches OC may be allowed for some thick wood boards or specific products, but it should never be treated as a universal rule.

Check the current installation guide for the exact board profile. Do the same for wood decking, PVC boards, aluminum decking and stair treads.

Joist Direction and Decking Layout

Deck boards usually run perpendicular to the joists. If you want the boards to run away from the house, the joists normally run parallel to it. If you want the boards to run parallel to the house, the joist and beam layout may need to change.

Decide the board direction before setting posts and beams. A late change can affect spans, ledger details, drainage and the position of every support.

Diagonal decking crosses the joists at an angle. This increases the unsupported distance along each board, so closer joist spacing is often required. The exact limit depends on the board and angle.

Picture-frame borders and breaker boards also need support below every fastening line. A seam should not float between joists. These patterns often require extra joists or carefully placed blocking around the perimeter and below the joint.

A flush beam is level with the joists. The joist ends connect to its side with approved hangers. This can keep the frame shallower, which is helpful near doors or where ground clearance is limited.

Both systems can work, but their details are different. Joists need the required bearing where they sit on wood or metal. Where hangers are used, the connector must fit the joist and supporting member and must be installed exactly as listed.

Do not assume a few angled screws create the same connection as proper bearing or a joist hanger.

How Far Can Deck Joists Cantilever?

A joist cantilever creates an overhang beyond the beam. It can make the deck edge look lighter and can reduce the required beam span, but the overhang is not unlimited.

Prescriptive rules often relate the maximum cantilever to the supported joist span and the values in a joist table. The American Wood Council’s DCA 6 guide, for example, limits its prescriptive joist overhang using the lower of listed conditions. Local codes may use different editions or amendments.

Do not use a simple rule such as “two feet is always safe.” Joist size, species, spacing, span and loads all affect the answer. Guard posts or other loads near the outside edge may also change the required framing.

Crowns, Straightness and Joist Alignment

Rim Joists and Blocking

Roofing nails, drywall screws and ordinary deck screws are not automatic substitutes for listed hanger nails or structural connector screws. A fastener may look strong but have the wrong diameter, steel properties, head shape or corrosion protection.

Do not bend, cut or modify a hanger unless its manufacturer permits that exact change. When in doubt, use the connector’s current installation sheet or ask the manufacturer.

Pressure-Treated Joists and Corrosion Protection

Deck joists are commonly made from pressure-treated lumber rated for the exposure. Check the end tag for the treatment category and intended use. Lumber close to soil, exposed to frequent wetting or used in a severe environment may need a different rating from wood used above ground with good ventilation.

Fresh cuts, holes and notches may require field treatment with an approved wood preservative. Follow the treated-lumber supplier’s directions. Also follow local rules for allowed notches and holes. A poorly placed cut can reduce joist strength.

Modern wood preservatives can be corrosive to unsuitable metal. Match joist hangers, screws, nails, bolts and flashing to the lumber treatment and environment. Coastal exposure and contact with pool chemicals may call for stronger corrosion resistance. Avoid mixing incompatible metals where moisture can create galvanic corrosion.

Does Joist Tape Help?

Joist tape is a self-adhering membrane placed over joist tops and sometimes beams. It can reduce the amount of water entering screw holes and sitting on horizontal wood surfaces.

It is an optional protective layer, not a repair for poor lumber, missing flashing or bad drainage. Choose a tape approved for the application and compatible with the decking, treated lumber and metal hardware. Install it on a clean, suitably dry surface and follow its temperature and overlap instructions.

The frame still needs ventilation. Water should have a way to drain rather than becoming trapped behind tape or blocking.
