Drop Beams vs. Flush Beams: Which is Better?

There are two common ways to set a beam under your joists.

A drop beam sits directly on top of the posts, below the level of the joists. The joists rest right on top of the beam. This is the more traditional layout, and it is usually the easier method for a DIY builder because the connections are simpler to see and check.

A flush beam sits at the same height as the joists, not below them. The joists connect to the sides of the beam using joist hangers, similar to how they connect to a ledger board. How to Build a Multi-Ply Beam (Laminating Wood)

Most modern decks do not use one big solid timber for a beam. Builders used to use solid 4×10 or 4×12 timbers, but solid large timbers are harder to find, cost more, and can crack more as they dry out. Instead, most beams today are built by laminating two or three smaller boards together. This is called a multi-ply beam.

First, pick straight boards with no major defects, usually 2×10 or 2×12 pressure-treated lumber. Cut each ply to the exact same length.

Crown Facing Up: The Golden Beam Rule

Just like joists, beam lumber has a natural curve running along its length, called the crown. Look down the length of each board like you are looking down a rifle barrel, and you will usually spot a slight bow to one side.

When you laminate your plies together, line up every board so the crown faces the same direction, and install the finished beam with that crown facing up. Over time, the weight of the deck presses down on the beam. A crown facing up slowly flattens out under that load.
