Uncapped composite (wood-plastic composite, or WPC). This is the original stuff from the late 1990s and early 2000s.

It’s wood flour and plastic mixed together with no protective outer layer.

The wood fiber sits right at the surface, which means it can absorb moisture, grow mold, and fade unevenly.

Capped composite. Same wood-plastic core, but wrapped in a thin plastic shell (usually a cap on the top, sides, and sometimes all four sides).

The cap is what blocks moisture and UV from reaching the wood fiber inside.

This is what almost every reputable brand sells now, and it’s what you should be buying.

PVC / cellular PVC. No wood fiber at all โ€” it’s foamed or solid plastic all the way through.

Handles water better than anything with wood fiber in it, since there’s nothing organic in there to rot or stain.

It does flex a bit more between joists than composite, so it usually needs closer joist spacing.
