Check treads, stringers, landings, handrails and the attachment to the deck. Stop using stairs that move or contain soft structural wood.
7. Areas below planters and rugs
Large pots, rubber-backed rugs and storage boxes can keep boards damp and block sunlight. Move them regularly and inspect below.
Use planter feet that allow drainage and airflow. Confirm that any rug backing is approved for the deck finish.
Is Gray Deck Wood Rotten?
Usually, gray color by itself is a sign of weathering rather than rot. Sunlight breaks down surface material, and rain removes part of it. The natural brown color fades toward silver or gray.
The key question is whether the board remains firm.
