How to Use This Deck Board Calculator

Enter the finished length and width of your deck. Then select the direction in which the decking boards will run. Add the actual face width of one board, the planned spacing between boards, the stock board length, and a waste percentage.

The calculator estimates the number of board rows required to cover the deck. It then converts those rows into total linear feet and an approximate number of stock boards. It also gives a basic fastener estimate based on two fasteners at each board-and-joist intersection.

What the Results Mean

Deck surface area

This is the deck length multiplied by its width. It is useful when comparing decking coverage, stain coverage, or project size. Square footage alone is not enough to calculate an accurate board count because board width and spacing also matter.

Board rows

This is the number of parallel courses needed across the deck. The calculation uses the actual board width and the gap between boards. Always measure the real board width. A nominal 1×6 or 5/4×6 deck board is commonly about 5.5 inches wide, but products can vary.

Linear feet and stock boards

Linear feet show the combined length of all deck board rows. The stock-board result divides that total by the selected board length and rounds up. Actual purchasing needs can be higher when board joints must land on joists or when short offcuts cannot be reused.

Waste allowance

A waste factor helps cover damaged boards, end trimming, knots, color selection, and cutting mistakes. Ten percent is a common starting point for a simple rectangular layout. Diagonal decking, picture framing, irregular shapes, and selective hardwood layouts may need more.

How Deck Board Quantity Is Calculated

The tool first finds how many rows fit across the dimension perpendicular to the boards. It includes one gap between neighboring rows. It then multiplies the row count by the distance each row must travel.

For example, on a 20-by-12-foot deck with boards running along the 20-foot length, the rows cover the 12-foot width. With 5.5-inch boards and a 1/8-inch gap, the calculator estimates the required rows, total linear footage, and number of selected stock lengths.

Before You Buy Decking Materials

  • Measure the deck in more than one place. Existing structures may not be perfectly square.
  • Use the board’s actual width, not only its nominal name.
  • Plan where butt joints, breaker boards, and picture-frame borders will sit.
  • Check whether the manufacturer requires a specific gap for wood, composite, PVC, or hardwood decking.
  • Order approved exterior fasteners that are compatible with the decking and framing material.
