Deck Stain Calculator
Estimate the exact amount of stain needed for your deck project.
1. Calculating Total Surface Area
Before calculating volume, you must determine the total surface area requiring stain.
- Main Deck Floor:
Deck Area=Length×Width
(For irregular decks, divide the layout into smaller rectangles, calculate each separately, and add them together.)
- Stairs (Optional):
Stair steps include treads, risers, and sides.
Standard Industry Estimate: 12 sq. ft. per step (or ~1.1 sq. m).
- Railings (Optional):
Railings have multiple sides, top/bottom rails, and balusters.
Standard Industry Estimate: 4 sq. ft. per linear foot of railing (or ~0.37 sq. m).
Total Surface Area=Deck Area+Stairs Area+Railings Area
2. Factoring in Coats & Product Coverage Rates
Product opacity directly impacts coverage:
- Clear / Transparent: ~200 sq. ft. per gallon (penetrates deep into natural wood pores).
- Semi-Transparent: ~250 sq. ft. per gallon (standard default).
TWP Stain
- Solid Color Stain: ~350 sq. ft. per gallon (acts more like paint, sitting closer to the surface).
TWP Stain
To account for multiple coats, multiply the single-coat surface area by the number of applications:

Total Job Square Footage=Total Surface Area×Number of Coats

3. Adding Waste Allowance & Rounding Up
Wood conditions vary. Unstained, weathered, or dry wood absorbs significantly more product than previously sealed timber. Adding a waste allowance (5% to 15%) covers board gaps, application spills, and high wood porosity.

Final Purchase Quantity
Since stain is sold in whole units (e.g., 1-gallon or 5-gallon buckets), round up to the nearest whole integer:
Recommended Purchase=⌈Exact Volume Required⌉
Formula Example
Project Parameters:
- Deck: 20 ft × 16 ft (320 sq. ft.)
- Coats: 2
Homedit
- Coverage: 250 sq. ft./gallon (Semi-Transparent)
- Waste Allowance: 10%
Calculation:
- Total Job Area: 320 sq. ft.×2 coats=640 sq. ft.
- Base Volume: 640÷250=2.56 gallons
- With 10% Waste: 2.56×1.10=2.816 gallons
- Recommended Purchase: 3 Gallons
